CUSTER, WA – A train carrying crude oil has derailed near downtown Custer, forcing officials to order a mass evacuation of the downtown and surrounding area.

According to the BNSF-Bahn, the train derails around 11:40 a.m.. m. Tuesday. Early reports show that three to five of the train’s tank cars are completely derailed. The BNSF also confirms there have been reports of a fire at the rear of the train, a likely source of the cloud of smoke seen by nearby WSDOT cameras.

Whatcom County responded to the news by ordering an emergency evacuation requesting everyone within half a mile to leave the area immediately.

The Whatcom County Sheriff’s Office is aware of the problem and encourages everyone to stay away from the train.

I-5 has been closed between Grandview Road and Birch Bay, and WSDOT is asking drivers to use several detours.

In downtown Custer, both Grandview and Main Streets on Portal Way have been closed as officials try to keep residents away from the crash site.

MPs confirm that WSP soldiers and agents from the emergency management department are also on site.

BNSF says they are still investigating the cause of the derailment, but that their first priority is to keep their crews and the surrounding city safe. They promised to post more information about the derailment as soon as it becomes available.
