Oscar De La Hoya gave his opinion on Canelo Alvarez’s performance against Callum Smith. The Mexican picked the Englishman in his first fight since being freed from Golden Boy Promotions. Canelo won a unanimous decision after dominating the fight from the start.
De La Hoya explained what Alvarez did wrong and what he could have done better. He even accused him of complacency in battle. However, many will feel that the legal battle between the two influenced these De La Hoya comments.
Speaking to Fight Hub TV on YouTube, De La Hoya said, “I obviously would have liked it if he threw more combinations. He could have stopped him if he wanted to. That’s an opinion that many fans shared after the fight.
However, the previous organizer gave him recognition for his performance. He said, “I think he did phenomenal work, he did a wonderful job, but he needs more work when it comes to letting go of his punches. ”
Although Canelo’s game plan works perfectly, De La Hoya says the Mexican wasn’t his usual self. « I think he’s very complacent right now. He is in a place where « I’ll throw one punch, one power shot, two shots, » said De La Hoya.
He went on to explain why this is not a good thing by saying, « You need to make sure the fans …. Get a spectacle. They get, you know, their money’s worth. ”
Despite these comments from De La Hoya, there will be many who believe the Alvarez-Smith fight was worth the money.
Ultimately, these comments were expected from his former coach. The litigation strained the relationship between the two.
