Real Madrid midfielder Martin Odegaard is in his first full season as a first-team member at the club, but his career could have ended very differently.
That is according to the former Norwegian international and current journalist Jan Age Fjørtoft, who has claimed that the current boss of Manchester City, Pep Guardiola – then at Bayern Munich – wanted to sign him before moving to Spain, and he had the impression that he could make Odegaard the world’s best player.
Fjørtoft told the Italian football journalist Fabrizio Romano on the Here We Go podcast, as quoted by Diario AS: “You have to bring this boy (Odegaard) to Munich, you have to bring him to Munich! I will make him the best player in the world! “
Odegaard was only 14 at the time and eventually moved to Madrid, which Fjørtoft tried to explain: “As you know, Liverpool was his favorite club, it was his favorite club as a kid. I still think the reason he ended up at Real Madrid was pretty simple in my opinion.
“First, Real Madrid had a second team, the other three clubs didn’t. The coach of the second team (Castilla) was Zinedine Zidane. He’s not a bad player, he’s not a bad coach! “
Odegaard’s return to Madrid after a season on loan at Real Sociedad was confirmed back in August and the Norwegian will be battling for a regular place at Zidane this season.
Odegaard scored seven goals for La Real last season and was the only great player to join the first-team squad in Los Blancos this summer.
