Sacramento will look to step up its defense after being lit up by Portland in the pre-season opener.
The Sacramento Kings are playing their second straight preseason game on the road against the Portland Trail Blazers.
Portland defeated Sacramento in the opener on Friday with 127-102. Buddy Hield was a bright spot for the Kings in defeat. He lost 23 points in 23 minutes and went from the 3-point line 5 to 11.
Head coach Luke Walton’s new offensive system was seen as Sacramento got out and ran when it could, but the team’s defense made efforts to slow Portland down. The Trail Blazers got 41 points in the first quarter and took advantage of the Kings sloppy transitional defense.
Portland shot over 50% off the field and off the bow on Friday, with six blazers hitting double digits. Former Sacramento center Harry Giles was effective against his old team, ending up with 18 points and 14 rebounds.
The Kings need to shoot better from the depths too, having made only 16 out of 50 attempts from the 3-point line. Point Guard De’Aaron Fox went one to seven from beyond the arc as he tried to establish himself as a low-level threat.
Sacramento has to do without the great men Marvin Bagley III and Hassan Whiteside for the second game in a row. Both players have not traveled to Portland with the team but are training in the hopes that they will be ready for at least one of the last two preseason games.
Marvin Bagley III and Hassan Whiteside played 1-1 in Sacramento under the supervision of Rico Hines. Luke Walton hopes they can play 3v3 next week and watch minutes in the preseason games next week.
