The 2020 NFL season has ended. Awards for individual accomplishments, including NFL Coach of the Year, won’t be awarded until February. 6 at the 10th. Annual NFL Honors Awards Show. Due to the ongoing Covid-19 pandemic, the award ceremony will be held virtually.
The pandemic made an already difficult job as an NFL head coach even more difficult. There are five coaches who find a way to lead their respective teams in unprecedented situations. You excelled and showed the greatest consideration for the recognition as Trainer of the Year 2020 (COY).
Before we evaluate the top 5 candidates for COY, let’s mention two guys who didn’t make this list, but deserve a few praise. Ron Rivera helped the Washington Football team win NFC East – albeit with a mediocre 7-9 record – while Mike Tomlin earned the Pittsburgh Steelers another title in the division. Tomlin has won AFC North in seven of its 14 seasons as Pittsburgh’s head coach.
Andy Reid’s rank is an indication that he is a victim of his own success. Unlike other awards, the COY vote is influenced by last year’s results and expectations for the preseason. Defending Super Bowl champions Kansas City Chiefs (14-2) were expected to dominate the AFC this year – and they did just that.
The Chiefs got the best start and home advantage of the conference in week 16 during the AFC playoffs, allowing most of the starters to rest for the regular season finale. An offensive mastermind, Reid helped lead the Chiefs to the NFL’s highest offense.
It must be argued that Reid, who won the 2002 Coach of the Year with the Philadelphia Eagles, had to finish 16-0 this season to take home the 2020 COY crown. He won’t win COY, but he has a great chance of making his second Super Bowl ring in February.
Brian Flores competed as the betting favorite in week 17 to win Coach of the Year, according to SportsBetting. com. However, the Miami Dolphins collapsed in their regular season finale and were defeated 56-26 in a must-win game by the Buffalo Bills. The loss prevented the dolphins from reaching the postseason.
Despite the lack of a playoff, the Dolphins had a successful season. You have won 10 games and built a top notch defense (by week 17). .
Flores lost its first seven games in 2019. Since then, the dolphins have posted a 15-10 record. The future in Miami looks bright as long as quarterback Tua Tagovailoa can develop into a better passerby.
In his first year as head of the Green Bay Packers in 2019, Matt Lafleur won 13 games and finished third in the COY vote. The defensive unit, however, was arguably more responsible for the success of the 19 packers than for LaFleur’s offense. That’s not to say that the former offensive coordinator didn’t deserve credit for his enormous first season at Green Bay, but that the prospects for the franchise would have looked even better if the offense could reach its potential.
With the Packers leading the NFL in the standings this season, it’s safe to say that the Packers’ offensive is up to the standards the Front Office envisaged when LaFleur was hired two years ago. Aaron Rodgers arguably had the best season of his career. The future Hall of Fame quarterback is a fast lock to win MVP honors. Rodgers set a franchise record of 48 touchdowns and produced eight 4-TD games.
Davante Adams meanwhile cemented his status as the top recipient of the NFL. Adams led the league by getting yards per competition (98. 1). In 14 games played, he made 115 catches, including 18 TD receptions.
Adams and Rodgers were among the five attacking players at Green Bay who received Pro Bowl nods. Tackle David Bakhtiar, Guard Elgton Jenkins and Aaron Jones also made up the NFC’s all-star roster. Among the five, Jones was the only player not named as the starter for the Pro Bowl, which will take place virtually with Madden 21.
LaFleur not only won 13 games in the second straight season, but also led the Packers to the top seed of the NFC and farewell in the first round. It is the first time the Packers are No.. 1 seed in the NFC since 2011.
Sean McDermott has led the Buffalo Bills to playoff appearances in three of the past four seasons. This year was particularly noteworthy because the Bills have won their top division crown since 1995. The Bills (13-3) ousted the dynastic New England Patriots as kings of the AFC East.
McDermott oversaw Josh Allen’s evolution into a star quarterback who the team could strive for years. Allen was a Pro Bowler for the first time in 2020 and set franchise records for overtaking yards (4th. 544), passing touchdowns (37), and completing (396) in a single season. He rushed for eight touchdowns a year.

McDermott deserves great credit for helping everyone become a star. The head coach is also responsible for establishing the Bills as the AFC juggernaut.
In his first season as head coach, Kevin Stefanski ended the Cleveland Browns’ 18-year playoff drought, which alone justifies being considered NFL Coach of the Year. The odds were against Stefanski, who took over the helm of a franchise company that hadn’t produced a successful season since 2007. However, the Browns won eleven games for the first time since 1994.
Stefanski introduced a run-first approach that worked wonders. The Browns finished third in the Rushing Yards and fifth in the Rushing TDs. Among the halfbacks, third year star Nick Chubb took second place in yards per carry. Despite missing five competitions due to an MCL sprain, Chubb found the end zone 12 times.
In addition to their dominant rushing attack, the Browns have had success in the air by making quarterback Baker Mayfield more comfortable in the pocket. Stefanski and Cleveland’s front office recognized that Mayfield’s success as a passerby relied heavily on having time to throw in his pocket. He fought under pressure as a passerby. When Mayfield has time to operate, he has achieved fame.
Mayfield flourished under Brown’s new and improved offensive line. The free agent new signing Jack Conklin was named one of the top run blocking tackles by Pro Football Focus, while the rookie tackle Jedrick Willis blocked the starting left tackle job in Cleveland. Left Pro Bowl guard Joel Bitonio had another strong season and Pro Bowl nudger Wyatt Teller, Cleveland’s right guard, went on to star in his second pro season.
Mayfield played for one of the strongest offensive lines in the league, throwing 26 TDs against eight interceptions this season. This follows a 22 touchdown and 21 interception campaign in 2019. Mayfield is at his best in Stefanski’s offensive.
Stefanski turned the long-suffering franchise into a club in its first season, making it the top pick for NFL Coach of the Year 2020.
