ATLANTA (CBSNewYork / AP) – Julius Randle scored 28 points and took in 17 rebounds, Austin Rivers hit a huge 3-pointer and the New York Knicks got off to a strong start with a 113-108 win over the Atlanta Hawks left Monday night.

The Knicks were able to complete a road trip of four games with their third win and improved to 4: 3 under coach Tom Thibodeau in the first year.

This is New York’s best record in seven games since the team started 6-1 in 2012/13. This was also the last Knicks squad to close with a winning record.

« We didn’t play great, but we found a way to win, » said Thibodeau. “I love the fight on our team. ”

The Hawks lost their second straight home defeat after winning four of their first five, and wasted a 15 point lead by the end of the third quarter. Atlanta’s three defeats totaled 14 points.

« It has become a big part of the NBA to get to the foul line, » said Quickley. “The foul I committed on him was only due to seeing a lot of great players. ”

Young had 31 points and 14 assists for the Hawks. Hunter put in 23 points.

New York took an early double-digit lead, forcing the Hawks to take time out after Barrett’s pass from Elfrid Payton gave the Knicks a 24-14 lead.

Atlanta finally found its attacking rhythm at the end of the first quarter and led at half time with 58:54.

The Hawks extended the lead on Hunter’s Lay-In to 82-67, 4:47 stayed in the third, but they couldn’t get New York out of the way.

While this isn’t exactly a cheap schedule, Thibodeau said that being away from home helped build the team chemistry.

« It’s almost like going to training camp, » he said. “I’m taking out the positives. With all the team meals and film sessions, it was very productive for us to be together as much as we did. ”

Knicks: C Nerlens Noel was a late scratch with a sprained left ankle. … The Knicks were also missing G Alec Burks (sprained left ankle), G Frank Ntilikina (sprained right knee), G Dennis Smith Jr. .
