At the start of the season, many suspected the Knicks would have to make a deal for a star or two if they were to fight for an even price with just one playoff spot this season, and though it’s still early and the team could use some extra talent, RJ Barrett and Julius Randle seem to have things covered themselves – with a little help from the rest of the team.
Randle continued his hot start to the year with another masterful performance on Monday night, scoring 28 points, 17 rebounds, nine assists and one steal.
He’s had seven turnovers so his ball control still needs some work, but you can’t be too annoyed with putting up numbers like this and just trying to make games.
Barrett had his best game of the season in a 113-108 win over the Hawks, putting in 26 points and taking 10 boards for his first double-double of the season. He also recorded five assists and two steals in the night.
Randle averages 22. 1 point, 11. 4 rebounds and 7. 4 assists while Barrett places 18. 3 points and 7. 6 boards per night.
With Barrett or Randle – or both – taking the lead almost every night, the Knicks so far seem to have had solid contributions from one or two other people to help the cause.
On Monday evening Elfrid Payton scored 14 points and distributed five assists, while rookie Immanuel Quickley scored 16 points from the bench – the Knicks were also plus-17 in his 19 minutes, the best plus-minus on the team.
Combine all of your efforts and the Knicks win four of their last five games and sit at No.. 5 seeds in the east at 4-3.
The Knicks are likely to take some steps at some point before the close of trading, either getting a bad draft capital contract if they do badly or pulling the trigger for a big deal if they’re in the playoffs. But the young group the team has put together, including Mitchell Robinson and Obi Toppin, could be enough to do something this year.
We’re only two weeks old, but the Knicks are turning a few heads here – and don’t intend to stop.
“I think we can do something special this year. I think a lot of people should be on the lookout for the New York Knicks this year, « Quickley said Monday night.
A lot can happen in the next few months, and Knicks fans can’t count on much based on the recent history of the teams, but in a year it’ll be special no matter what to do with COVID-19. Why can’t the Knicks be too?
