MONT BELVIEU – Nederlands high-ranking linebacker Kerrington Broussard caught a Barbers Hill fumble on the first overtime game and accelerated 73 yards for a touchdown to send Bulldog players and fans crazy. Nederland defeated Barbers Hill for a huge district win, 41-35.

The miraculous victory puts Monte Barrows Club in second place in District 12-5A Div. II at 4-1, while the year improves to 5-2 overall. It was also the Bulldogs’ fifth win in their last sixth competitions.

Senior quarterback Rene Cunningham was just over two minutes behind at 35:27 and 4:22 behind from his own 16-yard line on a field in which the superlative junior receiver, Kyndon Fuselier, a nearby Eagle defensive took down the left sideline and raced 84 yards to pay 2:10 to bring the deficit down to 35-33.

Cunningham decided to make a 2 point switch and teamed up with a wide open Kade Scott to tie the thing at 35-35.

Then the Bulldogs dodged one last Eagle bullet when Cunningham was intercepted for the fourth time with his own 46 by Eagle Jordan Gigout.

But Bulldog linebacker Jordan Durisseau saved the day by blocking a potential game-winning 45-yard field goal attempt by Maddox Malone with 0:02 in regular time.

This sets the stage for Broussard’s decisive touchdown in extra time – the biggest game of the Bulldogs season. Just under a second, however, was Fuselier’s spectacular 84-yard TD reception that triggered the tie.

Senior Josh Mazyck was only two minutes ahead of 10:16 in the second half with a 75-yard touchdown bolt to play in the third game. Payne Barrow’s point after attempt was perfect and the game was tied between 21 and 21.

That night, Mazyck had 126 yards with only eight stretches and caught seven passes for 110 yards. He had receptions of 15, 23, 13, 30, 16, 10 and 9 meters.

Cunningham completed 14 of 24 for 252 yards and two touchdowns, but was intercepted four times.

The Eagles’ Holdren played a role on all three scores in the first half as he went for two touchdowns and linked up with wide receiver Camden Grogan for 61 yards for Barbers Hills another score.

Holdren’s second frenzied touchdown half set the hosts with a 21-7 at 11:55.

But the Bulldogs walked nearly 21-14 yards in seven games in the final 4:11 of half after Cunningham’s death.

In the drive, Cunningham connected 6 of 7 passes for 68 yards. Mazyck turned Cunningham deals of 13, 30 and 11 yards for first descents and pushed the Bulldogs all the way to the Eagle 8-yard line. After his only incompleteness of the march, he struck Broussard with a punch who pushed his way into the end zone to play what was perhaps the greatest piece of the night.

It wasn’t long before Barbers Hill hit the scoreboard when Jordan Gigout picked up Cunningham at the third game of the game and returned it 17 yards to Bulldog 20. A 15 yard scramble in the middle of Holdren put the ball on the five yard line. In the next game, the Eagle quarterback struck from five yards to create a 7-0 lead with just 2:57 in the first quarter.

The Bulldogs cut a 14-0 deficit in half early in the first quarter when they ran 75 yards in just five games and workhorse Josh Mazyck did much of the heavy lifting. The fleet senior caught a 15-yard pass for the first time and then raced 41 yards on the floor to Bra 10, with three minutes to play in the first.

Cunningham raced for Mazyck’s 41-yard bolt from 10 yards around the left on the game to score the 2:33 touchdown in the opening verse, which meant a 14-7 Eagle lead.

In the first half, Cunningham was 8-of-12 for 114 yards and a touchdown. Mazyck caught five passes for 91 yards and rushed four times for 51 yards.
