World News – USA – Sean Malone dead: Cynical bassist dies at 50 years old

. . Sean Malone, longtime bassist for Cynic, has died at the age of 50.

. .

Sean Malone, longtime bass player for Cynic, has died at the age of 50. News of the bassist’s death was shared by bandmate Paul Masvidal, who wrote on social media: “I learned today that Sean Malone has died. I am deaf and full of sadness. He had a brilliant mind, a kind heart, and was one of the greatest musicians I have ever met. I know this is a shocking loss for as many fans whose lives he has touched with his art as it is for me. Please keep him on your mind and listen to his game to celebrate his life. ”

Malone’s cause of death and the exact date of death have not yet been disclosed at this time.

Malone was considered one of the classic members of Cynic as a bassist, appearing in full length on all three albums and in 1993 by the band for their first album “Focus. He left the band for a while, but returned in 2008 on time for the album « Traced in Air ». « He played with the band over and over before finally returning to them in 2012, and was the bassist for the 2014 album Kindly Bent to Free Us, » reported Metal Sucks.

Malone was known for playing the fretless bass and incorporating that sound into metal, but also worked as a session bassist during his time outside of Cynic, where he appeared on over 50 records. In 1996 he also released his own album « Cortlandt ». In addition to his musical career, Malone wrote four books on bass, « Music Theory for Bassists », « Dictionary Of Bass Grooves », « Rock Bass » and « A Portrait of Jaco: The Solos Collection ». He also taught music theory as an assistant professor at the University of Central Missouri and Carnegie Mellon University, Blabbermouth reported.

It’s true that my relationship with Cynic has been a little unconventional over the years, but given the band’s history, it’s understandable that some have viewed me as a « metal » bassist. For me, metal – as it relates to Cynic – has always been more of a musical texture than a lifestyle. And I’ve always only seen myself as a bass player, not a particular type of bass player; I’m losing the politics of the music genre. …

But at the heart of it all is simply this: sum musicus – I am a musician who enjoys studying, composing and teaching music as much as performing it.

Malone had a strong musical partnership with his cynical colleague Sean Reinart, who passed away earlier this year. In January 2020, Reinart, the cynical drummer, was found unresponsive at his home at the age of 48. Malone was talking about his bandmate at the time, writing to Blabbermouth, and saying that Reinart has « offered his trust in every rehearsal, recording, and performance we’ve ever done, and it’s likely I’ll never experience the same thing again. « . The truth is, we’re all lucky – lucky to have been alive while Sean Reinert was making music. ”

When news of Malone’s death was posted online, many reacted with shock and sadness to the news of the bassist’s sudden death. In response to Masvidal’s post announcing Malone’s death, one fan wrote, « Wtf? The world’s most underrated musician. On the Cynic tour of Pittsburgh at City Limits, he generously wrote the full transcriptions of his bass parts for Veil of Maya when I was 12 years old. Extremely generous person. I still have them. REST IN PEACE. ”

Another added, “What a terrible year. I’m sorry to hear that. One fan wrote: “WHAT ?! He inspired me so much as a young musician. And another answer is, “One of the most talented bass players of all time. REST IN PEACE. ”

Totally shocked and sad to hear of Sean Malone’s death . . . he was a great bass and stick player who I’ve worked with many times over the years. He was my Geddy in Cygnus & The Sea Monsters, he played on 1. OSI album with me … (cont. ) Image. Twitter. com / QKzt8VuhYN

Sad news indeed. I had only met #SeanMalone once or twice, but respected him as a serious musician, underestimated & with unusual diversity. It is unfortunate that #Cynic is so overlooked and occupying a space resembling a subgenre within subgenres (the prog / alt side of 90s death metal). RIP https: // t. co / D3W88kyKgY

The death of Sean Reinert and now Sean Malone in the same year is difficult to understand. Very cruel. image. Twitter. com / 0vFsd2wnuc
