AUSTIN, Texas (AP) – Texas state attorney Khambrail Winters, a graduate of Alief Taylor High School, was fatally shot in San Marcos, Texas and two men arrested and charged with murder, officials said on Wednesday with.
Police officers responded to shots fired Tuesday night at the Lodge Apartments in San Marcos after witnesses described drug trafficking, according to a testimony from the San Marcos Police Department and city officials.
The officers found Winters with a gunshot wound to the chest. The San Marcos Police, Hay County Ambulance and San Marcos Fire Department personnel began life-saving efforts but were unsuccessful. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Witnesses told police that Winters, Enalisa Blackman and Michael Ifeanacho went to the apartment building with the intent to buy marijuana, the police statement said. Winters was shot during the deal.
Police arrested Blackman and Ifeanacho on charges of capital murder. Both are being held in Hays County Jail.
An investigation is ongoing and police are hoping to identify two other people involved and other witnesses. Investigators watch surveillance videos in the area, but the cameras in the apartment building were not working, the statement said.
Texas State soccer coach Jake Spavital said he shared the news of Winters’ death with his teammates on Wednesday morning and they were deeply saddened.
« We will stand together as a team during this difficult time and support each other, » said Spavital in a statement. « Our thoughts and condolences go to the family and loved ones of Khambrail. ”
