Valerie Bertinelli, who frequently hosts cooking segments on NBC’s Today, got emotional and tearful when she first appeared on the show after her ex – husband, Eddie Van Halen’s death in October.
Bertinelli appeared on the show from home to share one of her favorite healthy dishes. « Valerie, first of all, it’s so great to see you, » said host Hoda Kotb. « You were in our hearts, we thought of you. We thought of your son Wolfie. And we’re just wondering how you are doing right now. ”
« It’s so good to see you too, » said Bertinelli, clearly holding back her tears. « I don’t know why I’m tearing up. You know when you hear voices and see people that you feel a connection with, and then . . . you always make me tear me apart. ”
Bertinelli shared how she dealt with the loss of Van Halen. « It was tough, » she admitted. “Very bittersweet. We’re fine. We spent the holidays together. I’ll see [her son] later today. We spent a lot of time together. ”
« It’s hard, » she continued. « I texted him a few dozen times and I want to, » Oh, I can’t text him right now. ‘”

She thanked Carson Daly for the beautiful piece he had done on her son. “It really touched my heart and how you treated him and you were so good to him. And as a mother, I wanted to thank you. ”
Bertinelli and the Today team fought their tears and turned to lighter topics like Bertinelli’s hair color, then moved on to the actual cooking segment.
Despite the divorce, Van Halen and Bertinelli remained a close family, linked through their son Wolfgang. Bertinelli shared a touching Instagram post shortly after Van Halen’s death in October.
« 40 years ago my life changed forever when I met you. You gave me the only true light in my life, our son Wolfgang, ”she wrote along with a family photo. “In all of your challenging lung cancer treatments, you have kept your great spirit and that mischievous grin. I’m so grateful that Wolfie and I were able to hold you in your last few moments. I’ll see you in our next life, my love. ”

She later flooded her Instagram story with family photos titled « Forever Family. Bertinelli and Van Halen were married from 1981 to 2007. Van Halen was diagnosed with tongue cancer in 2000 and throat cancer in 2014. Wolfgang Van Halen announced that his father had stage 4 lung cancer in 2017 and brain cancer in 2019.
Van Halen died on March 6. October at the age of 65. « I can’t believe I have to write this, but my father, Edward Lodewijk Van Halen, lost his long and arduous battle with cancer this morning, » said Wolfgang Van Halen on Instagram. “He was the best father I could ever ask about. Every moment I shared with him on and off the stage was a gift. My heart is broken and I don’t think I will ever fully recover from this loss. I love you so much pop. ”
