According to Google Cloud, developers may write software that is completely cloud-independent, but which can still have problems

. .

According to a new survey by the Enterprise Strategy Group on the modernization of apps, 92% of companies consider it important to use multi-cloud-capable container management and orchestration solutions. According to Netapp, multi-cloud refers to the distribution of cloud assets, software and applications across multiple cloud environments, using multiple cloud computing platforms to support a single application or an ecosystem of applications residing in work together in a common architecture.

Public cloud providers offer virtual computing, storage, and many services, but they still differ from each other because they operate in different geographic regions and offer different security, data sovereignty, and hybrid capabilities than others. Even the user experience, including developer tools, web portals and automation features, is not consistent.

Using multiple clouds is not easy. An app that is designed to work great in one cloud cannot easily run in another.

According to Google Cloud, developers can write software that is completely cloud-independent and can be run anywhere. But you can run into problems like:

Some multi-cloud solutions have even been developed by the public cloud providers. We take a look at some of these in the next section.

(The following list is in no particular order and was compiled with the reach of the service providers and popularity in mind. )

One of the most popular Google Cloud services in the multi-cloud segment is Anthos. Introduced in 2019, Anthos enables users to manage workloads running in third-party clouds such as AWS and Azure. This allows applications to be deployed, executed and managed in the cloud of their choice without administrators and developers having to learn different environments and APIs. Anthos leverages open APIs, giving users the freedom to modernize anywhere, anytime, at their own pace. Because Anthos is based on GKE, the Kubernetes managed service, users can automatically receive the latest feature updates and security patches.

Microsoft Azure Arc offers two important functions: providing Azure management functions for any infrastructure and enabling Azure services to run in any location. Since its inception, Azure Arc has seen tremendous customer interest and adoption across all industries. Azure SQL Managed Instance and Azure PostgreSQL Hyperscale can run in on-premises data centers, in multiple clouds, and at the edge.

VMware vRealize offers app-centric security and network visibility in hybrid and multi-cloud environments. It provides transparency and security planning across clouds that users can use as a service or deploy locally. The tool maintains control of users’ infrastructure with custom policies and automated workflows that clearly depend on how users want their multi-cloud environment to run.

NetApp’s cloud solutions offer a comprehensive suite of hybrid cloud data services that simplify the management of applications and data in cloud and on-premises environments to accelerate digital transformation. It claims to offer a hybrid multi-cloud experience that breaks down technological and organizational silos to deliver better customer value as the company continues to digitalize.

IBM’s MCMP platform supports multiple technology stacks on a multi-vendor platform by: – Optimizing cloud spending and usage; Manage service mapping and dependencies; and expansion of DevOps processes for traditional IT and cloud natives. With the MCMP from IBM, companies can analyze the health and inventory of their multi-cloud systems.

Morpheus is a leader in the Gartner 2020 Magic Quadrant for Cloud Management Platforms (CMP) and claims to have the highest deployment, brokerage, governance and customer feedback capabilities in this area. Morpheus is an application-oriented automation and orchestration framework that can be used to provide a self-service catalog for deploying applications from bare metal servers, VMs, containers and public cloud services.

Scalr was founded in 2007 with the aim of bringing together distributed IT teams across common cost and security standards while at the same time maintaining local autonomy. The Scalr organizational model combines proactive and reactive policies with a hierarchy that corresponds to the organizational structure. Scalr’s platform enables companies to achieve cost-effective, automated and standardized application deployments in multi-cloud environments. Scalr’s customers include Samsung and NASA.

The Snow Commander Cloud Management Platform is built from the ground up on a common architecture and offers an all-in-one solution that supports environments with multiple hypervisors and multiple clouds. Snow Software has been named a Leader in the Gartner Magic Quadrant for Cloud Management Platforms 2020 for the second year in a row.

Junipers JUKE has created a permanent and distributed storage and network layer for containers, schedulers and distributed applications over clouds. JUKE eliminates the need to create and manage multiple and isolated clusters for each individual cloud provider. This drastically reduces management time and complexity, and allows flexibility and ownership of your data, with applications and containers deployed, moved and distributed based on your needs, not subject to cloud provider / scheduler restrictions.
