The National Weather Service has released a tornado clock for Pee Dee and Grand Strand, including Counties Horry and Georgetown.
A tornado warning had previously been issued in an area stretching north from Conway to Whiteville, N. C.. . , but has expired for South Carolina. Doug Hoehler, a meteorologist with the Wilmington, N.. . C.. . said a radar-indicated weather cell that started about 10 miles north of Conway and moved northeast at 40 to 50 miles per hour.
« If it deposits a tornado, it will be short-lived, » said Hoehler because of the speed. No reports from the ground had yet indicated that a tornado had hit.
A tornado clock means the ingredients for a twister are in the atmosphere, but one was not discovered. A warning means that a potential tornado has been indicated by radar or an observer, and those on the trail should hide away from the windows on the first flood of a stable structure.
The clock on display on Thursday afternoon also extends across much of southern and central North Carolina and expires at 10 p.m.. m. The storm threat comes when storms sweep across most of the eastern United States on Thursday.
Forecasters for the weather service’s Weather Prediction Center said a wide range of storms moving east in front of a cold front could include flooding rainstorms, mixed rainfall and snow from western Pennsylvania to Tennessee, and rain in the southeast, including the northeast , causing chance of severe thunderstorms in the eastern half of South Carolina.
Storms were expected between 4pm in the Lowcountry. m. and 8 p. m. for areas west of Interstate 95 and between 5 p. m. and 9 p. m. For areas in the east, the Charleston Meteorological Services office said. Harmful winds blowing up to 58 miles per hour are possible.
