On Saturday night, the Free Agent Center Tristan Thompson signed a two-year deal for $ 19 million with the Boston Celtics. Thompson had some interested applicants, including the Cleveland Cavaliers, Toronto Raptors, Los Angeles Lakers, and Los Angeles Clippers. However, according to league sources, the Celtics have always been a Darkhorse favorite for Thompson’s services, and now they’re getting even closer to the Eastern Conference’s best team after signing him. It is not an exaggeration to say so either. The Celtics lost Enes Kanter and Vincent Poirier, both centers, this off-season, and adding a reliable rebounder was an urgent need. Well, they have that now in Thompson, who has almost every recreational accolade in Cavaliers franchise history.
While the Thompson signature rippled the NBA, it caused tidal waves in Cleveland. On the pitch, Thompson has always been a consistent player with the Cavaliers and last season was one of their best players. It was never surprising to see Thompson devour ricochets at either end of the pitch, but he was also a force offensively – a career best on average 12. 0 points per game last season. Thompson even added a three-point shot to their repertoire! He could even meet one before Ben Simmons could in Philadelphia.
With Thompson now at the Celtics, there is now a huge lack of depth in the middle position for Cleveland. To date, only Andre Drummond is the only true center on the roster. According to sources, Kevin Love has put on weight this off-season to play more center – something he usually doesn’t like. Larry Nance Jr. . can play at the five minute spot too, but he and Love are both inherently power forwards so it shouldn’t be normal for the Cavaliers to overwhelm them out of position.
Instead, Cleveland should focus on finding depth of quality behind Drummond that can also be part of the team’s plans. The only problem is that the Cavaliers can only use their $ 9. 7 million mid-level exception to sign a player at this time. Free agent tall man Harry Giles, who averages 17. 1 point and 10. 1 rebound per 36 minutes for the Sacramento Kings last season could be an option. Giles is only 22 years old and has the potential to be a great start to this league one day. If not Giles, then players like Willy Hernangomez or Thon Maker also make sense for the Cavaliers.
But it’s not just Thompson’s influence on soil that is overlooked. What he gave Cleveland of the place was like it wasn’t even more priceless. When LeBron James made his first return to the Cavaliers after a stint with the Miami Heat, he attempted to take Thompson, Kyrie Irving and Dion Waiters under his wing. Both Irving and the waiters defied James’ persistent guidance, but Thompson accepted. James taught him how to properly treat his body. This is how you maximize every exercise and every workout. He also taught Thompson how to lead both vocally and by example.
When James went a second time and Cleveland started demolishing and rebuilding, most would try to get out of town as soon as possible. Thompson did the opposite by actively taking up his new situation. Not only that, but according to sources, Thompson saw it as one of his duties to carry the cultural legacy James had built when he was as young and impressionable as the Cavaliers are today.
So there will be a massive void in Cleveland’s locker room next season when Thompson is gone. But culturally all is not lost for the cavaliers. The brightest young star on Cleveland’s roster, Collin Sexton has been selected as the team’s future cultural leader and will seek to carry on the legacy that James and Thompson have built. Fortunately, according to sources, Sexton has already established himself as the leader in Cleveland’s locker room, having earned the respect of all of his teammates through his hard work and determination. Sounds a lot like Thompson, doesn’t it?
It’s a shame to believe Thompson’s final days in a Cavaliers uniform were canceled due to the ongoing pandemic. After being elected the fourth overall winner in 2011, he was the team’s longest-serving player. When he leaves Cleveland, Thompson’s legacy is considered one of the greats in franchise history. As previously mentioned, he has numerous awards and was instrumental in helping the Cavaliers win the 2016 NBA Championship.
“Tristan was not only a fan, but also an opponent and then a team-mate. He’s always been one of the good guys, ”said Larry Nance Jr. . said to Cleveland. com. “His jersey deserves to hang in the rafters. ”
Even when he’s gone, Thompson will never be forgotten. Of course, he’s always seen as a gentleman for life, but his legacy lives on as Cleveland ushers in a new era. It is run by Sexton and the other young Cavaliers, all of whom have learned and grown under the legacy Thompson taught them.
