With the Miami Dolphins behind the Denver Broncos, 20-10 on the Sunday of the fourth quarter, head coach Brian Flores replaced rookie quarterback Tua Tagovailoa with Ryan Fitzpatrick. The Broncos achieved a 20-13 win after the quarterback change.
Tagovailoa had his ankle rolled onto a sack before leaving the game but showed little sign of injury as he stayed on the sidelines as Fitzpatrick took his place.
It was the sixth sack of the day that Tagovailoa had taken. The Dolphins rookie was 11 of 20 for 83 yards and a touchdown before leaving the game. Flores told reporters after the game that the decision to bench Tagovailoa was about his performance, not his injury.
« We had to do something to create momentum and that’s why we made the switch, » said Flores. “He’s a confident boy. . . . He has dealt with more. ”
Flores said Tagovailoa will remain the Dolphins starter against the New York Jets next week.
Fitzpatrick led the Dolphins to a field goal on his first run to cut Denver’s lead to 20-13. But he sealed the Broncos win by tossing Justin Simmons an interception in the end zone on a third pass with 1:08 minutes left. He finished 12 of 18 passes for 117 yards and an interception.
Fitzpatrick started the first six games for the Dolphins this season before Flores moved to Tagovailoa in Week 8. The round one rookie and the future of the franchise blossomed in its first three starts – all Dolphins win – and finished 63. 6 percent of his passes and five touchdowns without a break.
