SALT LAKE CITY – Utah turns 125. Birthday with a memorial broadcast and statewide fireworks in every county Monday night.

Statehood Day or Jan. . 4, usually goes unnoticed as the major holiday celebrations come to an end and people return to their normal everyday activities.

The Department of Heritage and Arts of Utah was mandated by lawmakers to pass on the 125th. However, commemorating the 50th anniversary of statehood in Utah faced challenges with the COVID-19 pandemic. Legislature allocated $ 1 million from the 2020 CARES Act to hiring local celebrities, performing artists, and studio or sound engineers, and the money had to be spent by the end of the year.

Josh Loftin, spokesman for the cultural heritage division, said social distancing guidelines resulted in the « Thrive125 » anniversary celebration being taped in different parts of the state and broadcasting at 6:30 pm Monday night. m. on all local TV channels, with fireworks at 7:30 p.m.. m. in many cities in Utah.

« It’s a dose of showing that we can come together as a people and celebrate our history, our present and our future, even if it only lasts an hour, » he said. “I think we could all use something uplifting and optimistic. That’s what this program and the fireworks will be, «

Loftin said the creators of Thrive125 worked just as hard on living up to history for the 2021 celebration of statehood as they had previously done with the 2019 Spike150 celebration and the transcontinental railroad. The aim was to recognize the good history of the state such as women’s suffrage, but not to ignore or downplay the negative effects on Indians, Asians, African-Americans, Irish settlers, and other immigrants who have made up the state’s population for more than 125 years.

« When we (the Spike150) celebrated, we made sure that we really highlight these voices, not whitewash them. to be honest what (the party) was about, ”Loftin said.

Thrive125 is designed not only to celebrate Utah’s 125th anniversary, but also to educate the public about Utah’s nearly 50-year journey into statehood. According to his website, the goal is “to honestly discuss our relationships with one another, with the nation as a whole, and with the country itself. ”

The Department of Heritage and the Arts hopes to encourage public schools to leverage newly created resources such as lesson plans for Utah’s immigrants, original Native American history and sovereignty, and Utah’s ties to polygamy, adding to the effort to become a state be slowed down. A 16-minute video entitled « Becoming Utah: A People’s Journey » was also posted on YouTube as an all-in-one history lesson that was designed to be fun and relevant.

According to Loftin, the biggest obstacle to making these events public was making the story « engaging » while it is currently confined to a virtual platform.

“This celebration of statehood is an opportunity for Utahns to start their New Year with unity and hope. This program celebrates the arts and their importance to the economy and quality of life of the state, and encourages each of us to continue serving the cultural community as our economy recovers. New government. Spencer Cox said in a press release.
