SMITHFIELD, R. . I. – The percentages usually favor a basketball team that does the things Wagner College did on Wednesday.

Wagner had ruled edges on the backboards and on second chance points, and his defensive scheme kept the pace almost up to his liking, but faulty shots and bad suffering prevented the Seahawks from turning this to their advantage in their northeast conference opening, a 74-62 loss to Bryant.

Senior Elijah Ford led Wagner with 23 points, newcomer Elijah Allen with 15 and senior Alex Morales with 10 points. Peter Kiss scored 22 points to lead the Bulldogs (5-2, 2-1 NEC), Chris Childs had 14 points and Hall Elisias had 12 points.

The game tipped Bryant’s path to the limit of the foul. Bryant made 20 of 29 fouls. Wagner was 3 for 9. Nevertheless, Bryant had his hands full to keep the Seahawks (0: 2, 0: 1) at a distance for almost the entire second half, as the home team’s smallest lead after half was 43:38 and not quite two minutes had passed were.

The Seahawks weren’t without a chance. Thanks to a 45:29 rebound – including a 24: 5 lead in offensive boards – Wagner attempted 27 more field goals than the Bulldogs. Additionally, Wagner used confusing zone defense and a deliberate offensive to keep Bryant from playing at his preferred breakneck pace. Bryant entered the game third in the nation in the standings (98 ppg) and is the first nationwide in the modern metric known as pace, which is logged by the Kenpom website. com.

Ford scored on track to 43-38, but Kiss scored two hanging layups and took a free throw to put Bryant ahead on 48-38.

A three from Childs and another kiss-bucket on a leak pushed the lead down to 54-40 at 12:16. At this point, Wagner had 16 offensive rebounds against Bryant’s three but had little to show. For the game, Wagner was 27 for 71 off the field (38%), compared to 23 for 44 (52). 3%) for Bryant. Morales assisted on a Ford layup and then scored another hit to close the gap to 65-58 at 3:53, but Wagner didn’t get any closer.

The first half wasn’t much different as the Seahawks did a lot of things head coach Bashir Mason believes are essential, including racking up eight offensive rebounds on the way to a 20-13 advantage on the glass.

In addition to Ford’s excellent first half (16 points in 8v11, four rebounds and two steals), the Seahawks lost 40-34 at break. Allen and Ford were key men in a late first half spurt that put Wagner to 37-34. Allen fed Ford for a layup, Ford narrowly again, and Allen, Delaware’s Gatorade Player of the Year last year, sailed in a three to cut Bryant’s lead to three.

Wagner’s biggest flaw in the first 20 minutes was his penchant for fouling. The Bulldogs went off the line 9 for 12 and were in the bonus for the final 13 minutes of the half. Michael Green III and Elisias each had nine points.

NOTES: The teams will meet here again on Thursday. To limit travel and exposure during the pandemic, the NEC created a conference that mainly features two-game series. Bryant shared a series in St. . Francis, Brooklyn last Tuesday and Wednesday. After the game on Thursday, Wagner’s next action will take place on Monday and Tuesday in the Spiro Sports Center against Sacred Heart. No spectators are allowed at Spiro. All NEC games are featured in the front row on the NEC website.
