World news – « Wake-up call »: Labor MP disagrees with McKay

MP Prue Car's comments on the unions' release of election information are in direct contrast to their leader, Jodi McKay.

Labor education spokeswoman Prue Car has called union-commissioned polls a « wake up call » in which people « want us to do a better job. »

Speaking to 2GB, Ms. Car said that Australian Workers’ Union Secretary Daniel Walton and Health Services Secretary Gerard Hayes « their members have expressed concern about the publication of the survey ». This comment is in direct contrast to her leader, Jodi McKay, who likened the poll to a « coward strike » by « faceless men ».

« They express concern from their members and I think that’s all they are doing there, » Ms. Car said.

« I think Jodi is working as hard as possible as an opposition leader, and I think we all have a responsibility to do the work it takes to hold the government accountable. »

Ms. Car declined to support Ms. McKay’s statements that the two men behaved similarly to Eddie Obeid and Joe Tripodi.

When asked if she could envision firing Ms. McKay as the leader, Ms. Car said, « I have always supported the leader. »

The Londonderry MP said the bombing poll shows Labor needs to do better in persecuting the coalition.

« This one poll is a bit of a wake-up call. We have to do better, and I’m not really surprised because people in the community are telling me, ‘Come on guys, you have to do better, and we have to take this message up « said Ms. Car to 2 GB.
