One of the biggest surprises from ‘WandaVision’ is how much of it is a truly delightful sitcom in itself. After looking at the posters and various trailers for the city, it’s easy to assume that ‘WandaVision’ is simply parodying several epochs of sitcom television before moving on to the more famous superheroes given the fragmented reality. While there is some teasing, the first two episodes of ‘WandaVision’ feature two extremely charming stories that spotlight two characters who have clearly been underserved by their film appearances.
‘WandaVision’ tells the story of Wanda Maximoff (Elizabeth Olsen) and the Vision (Paul Bettany), two superheroes with wildly complicated origins that draw their power from the so-called Mind Stone. Though a fleeting romance developed between the couple, their avenging life got in the way, and the last time we saw the vision he was killed by the world-conquering Thanos (Josh Brolin). Now, with no hint of an explanation, both Wanda and Vision appear to be living in black and white in a classic sitcom TV series, trying to make it as the ordinary couple hiding their powers in a small suburb.
The first episode is a loving homage to « I Love Lucy », while the second episode is about a decade before the homage to « Bewitched ». The main plot of both episodes is typical of their epochs, but still exciting. In the first episode, a misunderstanding between Wanda and Vision provides that Wanda has to prepare a meal for the chief of Vision at the last minute while her powers are kept secret. In the second episode, Wanda and Vision get to know the residents of their neighborhood, but almost reveal their secret when the inner workings of Vision are literally stunted.
There is a third, more disturbing act when the « real » world begins to invade and the alternate reality of this sitcom world is starting to diverge at the seams. It can be tempting to think of this third plot as the « real » story and think of the sitcom stories as the throwaway plot, and that would be a mistake. Wanda and Vision were unfortunate enough to be minor characters in films that are crammed with larger-than-life characters. Despite her appearances in three films, we only got glimpses of her development. In ‘WandaVision’ both characters are finally allowed to shine, and that’s where the show’s strength really lies.
Gone is the brooding witch who seeks either revenge on Tony Stark (Robert Downey Jr.) or redemption for the damage she has caused . In this sitcom world, Wanda can finally be happy and she shines with it. The chemistry between her and Vision is the most charming part of the series. Wanda brings seriousness to the screen – even in the fall of a sitcom, it’s clear to see how much she wants to adjust and enjoy a happy life along with vision. Every action has a radiant seriousness, be it making new friends or dealing with vision. Vision makes for an adorable, awkward husband who is always on the verge of losing his true nature but lovingly trusts everyone around him.
It is noteworthy that we only realize when Wanda is on screen that reality is falling apart. It’s clear that she is at the center of this world and in complete control of it – and the way the series shows that her control is failing is both brilliant and disturbing. The show’s commitment to the sitcom format makes ‘WandaVision’ such a tragedy – there is a lot of joy, a lot of love and a lot of charm in every scene. The fact that none of this is real is heartbreaking, and the fact that the show’s reality still refuses to explicitly state that it is a fake adds a lot of tension to the impending doom. Underneath there is a fear that is hard to pin down, and that makes the experience all the more powerful.
