World news – WILD WEATHER: What you need to know about today’s forecast

The Bureau of Meteorology has issued a severe weather warning for Bundaberg and the surrounding area.

A trough with an embedded subtropical low over the central Coral Sea is expected to deepen as it moves rapidly southwest towards the Capricornia coast on Sunday.

It is then expected to take a south-south-east lane on Monday and move parallel to the coast, either along the coastal edge or just offshore.

The risk of heavy rainfall depends heavily on the trail of the trough and the embedded subtropical low.

Six hourly rainfall between 120mm and 160mm is likely in some areas, with locally intense falls of 200mm to 250mm over coastal communities and Fraser Island possible.

Affected locations are Bundaberg, Fraser Island, Seventeen Seventy, Maroochydore, Gympie, Noosa Heads, Hervey Bay, Maryborough, Nambour, Rainbow Beach and Tiaro.

A flood watch is also active for coastal basins between St. Lawrence and the Queensland / New South Wales border, which extend inland to the Darling Downs.

Local river basins listed in the warning include the Burnett River, Baffle Creek, Kolan River, and the Burrum and Cherwell Rivers.

There is also a dangerous surf warning for the Ibex and Fraser Island coasts, with large and heavy surf conditions expected.

BoM has also issued a sea wind warning that storm winds are expected along the coasts of Capricornia and Fraser Island.
