A woman died in New Zealand’s first fatal shark attack in eight years, police said on Friday.
Emergency services responded late Thursday afternoon to reports of a woman injured in the water on Waihi Beach, a popular one Tourist site, which is 153 kilometers southeast of Auckland.
She was pulled out of the water with leg wounds and attempts to resuscitate her on the beach failed, media reported.
A vacation doctor, along with paramedics, lifeguards and rescue workers, had failed tried to save the woman, said Anderson.
The woman, whose identity was not released, should have an autopsy on Friday, said Anderson.
The last fatal shark attack in New Zealand took place in February 2013 when a 46-year-old swimmer was mistreated on Muriwai Beach, 25 miles west of Auckland.
