Sebastien Ogier took over the lead from Toyota team-mate Elfyn Evans at the Monte Carlo Rally on the third day of this year’s World Rally Championship opener.
After the action on Friday, Ogier had a flat tire on the penultimate stage Lost half a minute of the day, although he immediately recaptured Evans 16 seconds before the nightly stop.
Ogier restarted in the dark to comply with local COVID-19 laws and then continued his imperial strides on the 18.3km opening La Bréole – Salonnet.

It was a masterclass, and even the normally business-like French had big eyes on the adrenaline long after making the end of the stage.

After a short break, the crews returned to La Bréole – Salonnet for the last leg of the day, where the Toyotas regained their authority asserted. This time Evans was Ogier’s winner by just under 1.3 seconds – but it was enough to cheer the Welshman.
« I really needed that, » said Evans. « It’s been a frustrating day, really, just not really on the money … we’ll keep the pressure up! »
Ogier was unmoved and has a lead of 13.0 seconds than the teams on the final day prepare four stages.
« The condition has changed a lot since the first pass and also since the gravel crew pass. So it was a bit of what we see and try to trust, » he said. « But it was a clean ride for me. »
Neuville’s dazzling shape did not continue into the last phase of the day and this gave Rovanpera some breathing space during the overnight stop, leaving a gap of 7 seconds between them .
« I had a problem with my earplugs, so Jonne [co-driver Jonne Halttunen] had to scream all the time so I could hear the notes, » explained Rovanpera.
« I didn’t hear the notes that well, so I may not have felt that comfortable at the beginning, but as I got used to the result it was okay. »
The fight for the final one The podium is now more than a minute ahead of Dani Sordo in fifth at the wheel of the third plant, Hyundai.
The Spaniard struggled on Friday, but his pace improved dramatically on Saturday morning before returning to the last leg of the day suffered.
« I was only very slow, » he said after setting the 15th fastest time in the last stage.
« We have to get the two cars to the end of the rally. The only way is to drive a little slower than before, but it was very bad. »
In WRC2, the day delivered veteran Andreas Mikkelsen, who finished seventh overall and a 2:14 lead over Adrien Fourmaux’s M-Sport Ford, was another big chunk of the time. Oliver Solberg finished third for Hyundai.
« We’re driving comfortably again, very difficult conditions, but my information is really spot-on. I have the best gravel crew in the world. » Mikkelsen raved.
In WRC3, Yohan Rossel enjoyed another solid day and kept his lead over Yoann Bonato and Nicolas Ciamin.
