Indian Super League Gameweek Two caused a lot of excitement among Indian football fans, especially with the league’s first Kolkata derby, which beat newcomers to SC East Bengal by ATK Mohun Bagan. Elsewhere there have been a series of draws, with three out of five games ending in a stalemate, while Mumbai City FC scored the only other win of the round against 10-man Goa.

This ISL season there was little doubt that ATK Mohun Bagan were the favorites for the title. The merger of ATK and Mohun Bagan meant that both the ISL and I-League champions were merged into one fearsome outfit and that the club managed to keep all of their most valuable players, which only added fuel to their fire.

Unsurprisingly, ATK Mohun Bagan got their league campaign off to a brilliant start, beating Kerala Blasters FC before beating local rivals East Bengal 2-0. They are currently at the top of the table as no other club have won more than one game and they have one goal to concede too. While these are still early days in the season, this is the best possible start they’ve hoped for and title contenders are already a cause for concern.

Sergio Lobera’s departure from Goa mid-season marked the end of an era for the Gaurs. Lobera had been at the helm of Goa for three years, turning them into one of the most fun teams in Indian football. The fans were understandably upset when he left. To add insult to injury, he moved to rival Mumbai City FC and picked up a slew of Goa’s best players.

With this in mind, Goa FC and its fans probably wanted to stay ahead of the game when Mumbai and Goa met on March 25. November but unfortunately things didn’t go quite as they hoped for Goa. Goa started the game well enough with a few dangerous set pieces from Edu Bedia but took a real hit when Redeem Tlang in 40th. Minute because of a runaway two-footed duel against Hernan Santana was sent off. Goa still managed to stay there for a while and even get a couple of shots on target, but ultimately Mumbai City’s advantage as an extra man proved telling as Adam le Fondre scored a penalty in added time.

Hyderabad FC’s debut at ISL went unnoticed as the young club ended their first season at the bottom of the table, but this time Manuel Marquez Roca’s side seem to have some strength. Although Hyderabad conceded 29 goals in 18 games last year at a rate of slightly more than two goals per game, the ISL still have to concede this season. They won their opening game thanks to a lone goal from Aridane Santana before tying a goalless draw against perennial title contender Bengaluru FC.

At first glance, it seems like a good result for the Nizams that Hyderabad hold Bengaluru in a tie, but they will be disappointed not to be eliminated from the game on all three. Hyderabad were by far the more dominant team, scoring 13 shots compared to Bengaluru’s three. While most of these were long-range attempts that went over the bar, Santana had the best opportunity of the night with a header aimed directly at Gurpreet Singh Sandhu in the goal of the blues. Although they couldn’t get a result against Bengaluru, Hyderabad have been able to take full advantage of their defensive performances of late

In the run-up to the new ISL season there was a certain amount of hype surrounding Jamshedpur FC when manager Owen Coyle took over the team and strengthened it with some important transfers. Jamshedpur has not yet mastered the hype, losing their first game to Coyle’s former employer Chennaiyin FC before taking a two-goal lead against Odisha to take just one point from a game they should comfortably have won.

Jamshedpur started brilliantly against Odisha, with striker Nerijus Valskis scoring a brace in just over a quarter of the game, but Odisha gained confidence as the game progressed before goalkeeper TP Rehenesh used a moment of positional ignorance on Jamshedpur’s back against the wall. Rehenesh charged to meet an Odisha attacker before accidentally handling the ball just outside of his penalty area, resulting in a red card. Odisha made the most of the resulting free kick thanks to substitute Diego Mauricio’s poor result before Mauricio equalized late in stoppage time. For Odisha this was a comeback that they can get some positive results from, but for Jamshedpur it’s an all-too-familiar reminder of their struggles in the past.
