But when Scotland competes against England at the euro next summer, he is insisting that he will definitely just be a member of the Tartan Army.

The Celtic skipper overturned his decision to quit international football after talks with Gordon Strachan in 2016.

Broony returned to play England in London before seeing the campaign for the final World Cup.

At 35, he belongs to the generation of players who have never reached a final in Scotland.

Although he would still be able to get involved, the former captain insists that the baton has now definitely been passed on to this group of players.

« They got there and worked so hard over the past few years to make sure they qualified and they did really well.

« Fair play for you. I’m just happy for the guys and the whole country and all the fans.

« I hope the whole vaccine thing gets through in time for all the fans to go to Wembley, enjoy the game and immerse themselves in the whole culture of the euro.

« It’s been a long time. I remember France 98 well – everyone is sitting in the house watching the games – and I know how much it means to the nation.

« I had confidence in David Marshall for the punishments. He’s been fantastic for Scotland and in all the clubs he’s been to.

« After all, I knew he was going to save you and he did it at just the right moment. Our boys came back with a smile on their face. You did very well.

« It was difficult for her to play the 120 minutes as well. But to get the victory it is a great relief for yourself and the country. «

While former Celtic keeper Marshall was the penalty taker in Serbia, it was current Hoops attacker Ryan Christie who scored what looked like a win.

The former Inverness and Aberdeen star has flourished in recent years and Brown now believes he is one of the first names on Clarke’s team sheet.

He said, « Is Ryan a must for Scotland now? Yes, definitely. It’s been phenomenal for us for a year and a half.

« We just want him to keep improving. He works with good coaches here every week and I think that helped him too.

« He was amazing. He went to Aberdeen on loan, worked extremely hard in the gym, and built himself up. Everyone knows how hard they work, everyone knows how fit they are.

« He’s got that quality, once he gets that left foot you know that five, six, seven or eight out of ten are at least in the back of the web.

« He brings that with him. He brings this quality, he brings this willingness to run from the ball.

« You are in good shape, as are the other guys who were on international service. We are now looking forward to Saturday to continue playing like we did in our last game against Motherwell.  » Game. We were exceptional in the first half against Motherwell and we need to make sure we build on that. «

There will be no more international matches until March – and anyone who focuses fully on Celtic will switch back to club football.

With Rangers nine points clear at the top of the Premier League – despite Celtic holding two games – Brown knows the next few months will be decisive.

He said, « Jack Ross did a great job there. He’s built a really good squad and, like us, they have a great team spirit.

« It will be an open game because both football. Teams like to play football. I went to Easter Road last weekend and the field is in great shape.

« But we really need these three points, so we need to focus on ourselves instead of worrying about how Hibs or anyone else is going to play.

« We need to build on our performance at Motherwell before the break, especially in the first half at Fir Park.

« It was a great game, we got the ball out from behind, played between the lines, scored some great goals and could have had a few more.

« It’s what we’ve been working on for the past few weeks while the other boys were on international service.

« We’ve done a lot to push, build from behind, our style of play and the shape we should be in. «
