If this were approved by the Senate, she would be the first woman to hold this position in US history.

The 74-year-old economist was previously head of the US Federal Reserve and top economic advisor to former President Bill Clinton.

She is credited with helping steer the economic recovery from the 2007 financial crisis and subsequent recession.

As the chairman of the US Federal Reserve, Ms. Yellen was known for paying more attention to the impact of her policies on workers and the costs of rising inequality in the US.

Since leaving office, Ms. Yellen has spoken about the need for Washington to do more to protect the U.S. economy from the effects of the coronavirus pandemic.

Ms. Yellen grew up in New York City and received her degree in economics from Yale University. In addition to her work at the Fed and in government, she was a professor at the University of California at Berkeley.

The former Secretary of State is among the names announced for key roles in the new US administration.
